George Washington was one of the great Founding Fathers of our country, but some certainly didn’t see him that way when he was leading troops during the Revolutionary War, especially compared to Horatio Gates, who was having more success in the north at the time.

Horatio Gates knew he was having more success and felt he deserved more credit too. He disagreed with the way Washington often went about combat (such as in the Battle of Trenton), which always seemed to be on the attack. Gates took more defensive actions. And although Gates tried to convince Congress to appoint him as Commander-in-Chief, Washington’s luck began to change. The war began to be in his favor, and no one saw a point in changing the leadership.

As Washington and Gates continued to butt heads in regards to military strategy, Gates belittled him by reporting directly to Congress instead of Washington. Since Gates had recently had great success at the Battle of Saratoga and was appointed head of the Board of War, Washington’s leadership seemed to be failing once again, and Gates was more than happy to flaunt his superiority. Certain members of Congress (Benjamin Rush, Samuel Adams, Thomas Mifflin, and Richard Henry Lee) were pleased to see victory from Gates as well and overlooked him overriding the authority of Washington.
